VADODARA: A nine-year-old girl was allegedly molested by a co-passenger in a moving train late on Sunday night.
The girl and her parents had boarded Mumbai-Indore Avantika Express fromBharuch and were on their way to Ujjain. The accused, Jitendra Shekhawat (22), a labourer, was travelling to Rajasthan in Saurashtra Mail. However, he missed the train at Bharuch when he got down for water and later got into Avantika Express, police said.
Shekhawat was first thrashed by co-passengers and later handed over to railway police at Godhra railway station at about 2.20 am. The girl was in S-10 coach with her parents.
"I saw Shekhawat boarding the train in Bharuch on Sunday. My daughter was sleeping on the upper berth and I was awake till 1 am. I fell asleep but woke up when I heard my daughter screaming," said the victim's mother."I saw Shekhawat on the upper berth sitting next to my daughter and understood his intentions. I raised alarm but before co-passengers could react, he ran towards the toilet and locked himself inside," she added. Thevictim's mother called her husband who was sleeping few berths away.
The co-passengers soon got hold of Shekhawat and thrashed him. Police booked him under IPC section 354 for sexually harassing the minor and has been sent to judicial custody.
