INDIAN
RIVER COUNTY — A man was arrested Saturday and charged with raping a
woman during a Thursday home invasion, according to the Sheriff's
Office.
Abram Eugene Smith, 30, of
the 4100 block of Fourth Street, was charged with sexual battery and
burglary, according to his arrest affidavit.
A
woman told detectives a man wearing all black knocked at her door about
4 p.m. Thursday. She said she ignored the knocking, but then heard her
door opening and saw Smith walking inside her house.
The
woman told investigators Smith raped her on the couch and floor, at one
point causing her to hit her head on the floor, according to the arrest
affidavit.
"She tried to push the defendant off of
her but he just kept it up," the affidavit said. "The defendant told
her if she called the cops he would come after her."
She said she knew Smith as "A.B." and had previous negative encounters with him, the affidavit said.
"In
November, the defendant attempted to have sex with her and she had to
throw a bowling pin at him to stop him, and he threatened to come back
and get her then as well," according to the affidavit.
Deputies
went to Smith's house to look for him when the initial allegation was
made. Smith called dispatch shortly after to ask why the Sheriff's
Office was looking for him and was advised an allegation of a serious
crime was made against him.
He
then tried calling the woman several times while she was with
detectives. During a recorded conversation with her, he "mostly denies
the sexual encounter to be rape or against (the woman's) will, but
admits to having sex with (her)," according to the affidavit.
The burglary charge involves entering a dwelling with the intent of committing a crime.
Smith was being held Tuesday in the Indian River County Jail. His bail was set at $100,000.
